Monsoon Session of Parliament: Violence rocked both the Houses of Parliament in Manipur on Thursday, the first day of the monsoon session. The opposition demanded a statement from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and a discussion on the situation in the northeastern state. Both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha failed to transact any business as opposition members created ruckus over the Manipur situation despite the government’s assurance that it was ready to discuss the issue in both houses.

The meeting began on May 4, a day after a video of two women being marched naked by a mob in a village in Manipur became a web sensation, sparking outrage across the country. With opposition MPs raising slogans such as “Manipur” and “Manipur is burning”, Parliament witnessed continuous adjournments and was eventually adjourned till noon.
