Moeen Ali ready to return to Test cricket if new coach McCullum needs him

England all-rounder Moeen Ali has said the “door is open” for his return to Test cricket under Brendon McCullum as he prepares to retire from Tests announced last summer.

“Baz (McCullum) messaged me asking if I was ‘in’,” Moeen was quoted as saying by the Guardian newspaper. “I have played with him in the Indian Premier League and really enjoyed the way he works.

“We talked and he mentioned potentially, in the future, if there is a tour, or whenever really, will I be available? I said ‘call me at that time’. We will see. The door is open,” said of Worcestershire Player added.

England have reset the team setting after the Ashes debacle at the start of the year and will usher in a new era of captain Ben Stokes and McCullum with the series against New Zealand.

Moeen said he was looking forward to seeing what happens to England under the new leadership.

“And even though it’s sad that Chris Silverwood is gone as head coach and (Joe) Root steps down as captain, it’s always exciting when a new chapter takes place.”
