‘Modi surname’ defamation case: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s troubles in the ‘Modi surname’ defamation case are not ending as a Patna court has asked him to appear on April 25.

According to reports, the defamation case was filed in the MP/MLA court by BJP’s Rajya Sabha MP and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, Sushil Kumar Modi. Earlier on March 18, the MP/MLA court of Special Judicial Magistrate Adi Dev passed an order asking the former Wayanad MP to appear before it on April 12.

However, during the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel sought another date saying that the entire team was busy with the Surat case, in which Gandhi was sentenced to two years in jail and disqualified from the Lok Sabha.

At this, the judge asked Gandhi’s counsel to ensure his physical presence before the court on the next date of hearing of the matter on April 25.

Prosecution lawyer Priya Gupta told reporters that the statement of the complainant has been recorded and all the evidence has been submitted in the court and now only Gandhi’s statement is to be recorded.

Surat court sentences Rahul Gandhi to 2 years in jail

It should be mentioned here that a court in Gujarat’s Surat sentenced Congress leader Gandhi to two years in jail in a criminal defamation case filed against him in 2019 over his “Modi surname” remark. Against Gandhi for his alleged “How can all thieves have the same surname Modi?”

He said this while addressing a rally in Kolar, Karnataka ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Notably, a complaint was lodged against his remarks by BJP MLA and former Gujarat minister Purnesh Modi.
