New Delhi: As per Narendra Modi Government’s thrust to promote ‘Make in India’ Ministry of Defence On Friday it decided to withdraw tenders for deals related to the purchase of 14 short-range surface-to-air missiles and 14 helicopters.
However, the meeting allowed progress on an agreement to purchase air-to-surface missiles from France and allowed its overhaul. Russian helicopter, government sources told ANI.
The Defense Ministry has started reviewing import deals under the Buy Global category that are sourced entirely from foreign vendors.
Several deals have been put on the list of closures and deferments by the Defense Ministry and the ministry has discussed whether they can be closed in favor of Indian vendors or developers.
The foreclosure and deferment list includes deals such as very short range air defense systems, towed artillery guns, vertically launched surface-to-air missiles, shipborne unmanned aerial systems, MiG-29 combat aircraft along with additional P-8I surveillance aircraft.
Deals like general purpose machine guns under the foreign military sales route are also on the list and a missile deal is also going to be investigated.

The initiative was taken after Prime Minister Modi held a review meeting with officials of the Defense Ministry, including the then Chief of Defense Staff General.
