Modi government 2.0 doubled the speed of law: 149 bills passed in 198 days in the Lok Sabha, 133 bills approved in the first term, this is the slowest in history

  • The speed of law making has doubled in Modi government 2.0. Modi government has made a record of making laws in its second term. 17th Lok Sabha in 8 sessions. The government has passed 149 bills in 198 days from 2019 till now.

The Modi government has made a record of making laws in its second term. In the 17th Lok Sabha in 8 sessions, the government has passed 149 bills in 198 days since 2019. On an average, a new law is made in 1.3 days. This speed is double than the previous tenure of Modi government in 16th Lok Sabha. In the last 331 sittings of the Lok Sabha, 133 bills i.e. a bill was passed in 2.5 days on an average, which was the slowest pace of passing a bill in any Lok Sabha so far.

482 bills passed in 5th Lok Sabha in 613 days
The credit for passing the maximum number of bills goes to the Indira Gandhi government, which passed 482 bills in 613 days in the 5th Lok Sabha. Then 20 constitutional amendments were also made. After this, the second number 333 bill (in 485 sittings) was passed by the Rajiv Gandhi government in the 8th Lok Sabha. Indira government in its second innings also passed 329 bills in the 7th Lok Sabha in 464 days.

The Nehru government in the first and second Lok Sabha passed the first 638 bills of the independent country in 1244 sittings, out of which 204 were finance bills. Most of the Finance Bills passed in the Lok Sabha are the Bill of the Annual Budget, the Appropriation Bill, through which the government gets the right to withdraw money from a Consolidated Fund.

the fastest steadfast; 296 bills were passed in 356 days
According to Lok Sabha records, bills were passed at the fastest speed in the 13th Lok Sabha under the Atal Bihari government in history. Then 296 bills were passed in 356 sittings. That is, on an average, one bill was passed every 1.2 days. Among the bills passed were 14 Constitution Amendment Bills. The 12th Lok Sabha held the record of passing the lowest number of bills in the name of the Atal Government, then only 88 sittings were held, in which only 56 bills were passed, out of which 29 were finance bills.
