Guwahati: A court here on Tuesday sent 29-year-old model Rajkanya baruah, who was recently arrested for hitting eight people with his speeding car in connection with another road accident in 2017.
Barua had allegedly killed the son of a former BJP MLA. Karan Jyoti Handique, with his speeding car on October 26, 2017, in which he was seriously injured.
The city police on Tuesday arrested Barua in the 2017 case and produced him in the court of Judicial Magistrate Kamrup (Metro).
Earlier on October 8, the court had sent Barua to judicial custody after he was arrested for allegedly beating up eight roadside activists on the night of October 2.
According to Handik, son of former BJP MLA Nabanita Handik, he had suffered multiple injuries, including neurological problems, in the accident in Khanapara area of ​​the city and had to be hospitalized for several months.
Describing the incident, Handik said, “I had gone for dinner at Hotel Palacio in Khanapara that night and was returning home on my motorcycle. I saw Barua’s car parked a few hundred meters away from the hotel. After riding a few metres, he suddenly hit me, breaking my left arm and left leg. My nerves also hurt. I had to undergo treatment for at least three months.”
He had lodged an FIR at Dispur police station on March 20, 2018 after recovering from injuries.
Guwahati High Court Advocate Bhaskar Dev Konwar said, “Despite the registration of an FIR against the accused, the police did nothing. There was enough evidence against him. Now, almost three years later, the police have arrested him and the court has sent him to jail.”
