Aizawl: Tension on the Mizoram-Assam border escalated again on Tuesday after Assam Police personnel allegedly opened fire on civilians of the neighboring state, injuring one, an official said.

The incident happened around 2 am in the disputed Aitlang area bordering Assam’s Hailakandi district, when three residents of Vairangte town had gone there to take meat from a friend, residents of Bilaipur in Assam, Kolasib district deputy commissioner H. The incident on Tuesday came three weeks after a violent clash between police forces of the two northeastern states that left seven people dead and over 60 injured on July 26.

Earlier on Friday night, fresh tension erupted after unidentified miscreants bombed a primary school in Kachurthal area on the Assam-Mizoram border in Assam’s Hailakandi district ahead of the 75th Independence Day.

The primary school, located within two kilometers of the Assam-Mizoram border, was attacked with grenades while it was closed due to the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.
