New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday alleged that Rs 935 crore was misappropriated. MGNREGA The government should be held accountable for failing to curb the schemes and said corruption in the last four years.
The party also demanded that the government restore four per cent quota for persons with disabilities in police forces.
Congress spokesperson Pawan kheda said a media report, which assessed publicly available information Ministry of Rural Developmentdisclosed that Rs 935 crore was misused in the schemes under Mahatma Gandhi Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in the last four years.
These numbers are the result of audits conducted by the Social Audit Units under the Department of Rural Development. Ministry of Rural Development, he told in a press conference.
Khera said the important outcome of the Social Audit Unit was that in most cases the primary type of rigging was “financial rigging” which includes and is not limited to bribery, payments to non-existent persons and vendors at inflated purchase prices.
He said that out of the misappropriation of Rs 935 crore, only Rs 12.5 crore has been recovered, which is 1.34 of the misappropriated amount.
The Congress leader alleged that the fact that rigging is taking place is a testament to the lack of accountability and due diligence by the Narendra Modi government.
“Congress party demands that the Government of India be held accountable for its manipulation” MNREGA Planning and ensuring that social audit is done as per the provisions of MGNREGA,” Kheda said.
He said, “We also demand that the Government of India should recover the wrong amount at the earliest and ensure that the recovered money is used to compensate the poor and marginalized people who have been affected by the Covid-19 mismanagement. The Congress leader claimed that between 2017-18 and 2020-21, Tamil Nadu saw the maximum amount of misappropriation of Rs 245 crore and that of Rs 12.34 crore in Bihar.
Kheda claimed that Rs 51.29 crore was siphoned off in BJP-ruled Jharkhand at that time, while there was no misuse of MGNREGA funds in Rajasthan.
He alleged that this shows the real intentions of the BJP, whose government has allowed misuse of taxpayers’ money worth Rs 935 crore for the poor and marginalised.
Khera also demanded that the Center withdraw the notification that scrapped the four per cent quota for persons with disabilities in police forces and undo this “inhuman” wrongdoing.
He claimed that with the increasing crimes against women under this government, it is a matter of shame that more than 90 per cent of the posts reserved for women police officers are vacant.
“We demand to fill them on a war footing,” Khera said.
