Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu, who celebrated her 27th birthday with her family on Sunday, said the occasion has become even more special after her performance at the Tokyo Games.

Chanu took to Twitter to share pictures from the ceremony and wrote that silver was her “biggest reward” at the quadrennial showpiece event. “Birthday celebrations with my family after a long time,” she wrote.

Chanu, who won the silver medal in the women’s 49kg category, hails from Nongpok Kakching village, about 25 km from Imphal. He has six siblings, three sisters and two brothers.

The 27-year-old lifted India’s first medal at the Tokyo showpiece by lifting a total of 202 kg (87 kg + 115 kg) and bettered Karnam Malleswari’s bronze medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Chanu also banished the ghosts of the 2016 Olympics, where she failed to enter a single legitimate lift.

Chanu was given a rousing welcome at the Delhi airport after returning home from an incredible expedition in Tokyo. During the felicitation ceremony, he was given an award of over Rs 1 crore and appointment letter to the post of Additional Superintendent of Police (Sports).

Earlier in the day, Chanu celebrated the day in the presence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh. He cut the cake at the CM’s official residence.

“It was a great pleasure to be with Mirabai Chanu at my official residence on her 27th birthday. Mirabai, wishing you a very happy birthday. May you keep brightening the name of the country,” wrote Singh.

Chanu responded by thanking the CM for this warm gesture. Chanu tweeted, “Hon’ble CM N Biren Singh sir, thank you for making my birthday so special.”
