A minor girl was allegedly gang-raped by two men in Jharkhand’s Bokaro, following which protesters blocked NH 23 on Thursday, following which police had to lathi-charge and use tear gas to disperse them. Police said the protesters blocked National Highway 23 (Bokaro-Ramgarh-Ranchi) at Petarwar Chowk under Petarwar police station and pelted stones at them, injuring several policemen and people.
“A 17-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped by two men from different communities in Bundu panchayat under Petarwar police station area on Wednesday night. Both the accused, who claim to be her friends, have been arrested. And an FIR has been registered in the matter,” Bokaro’s Superintendent of Police, Chandan Kumar Jha told PTI.
Jha said the agitators had blocked National Highway 23 while some outsiders tried to create law and order problem and pelted stones at the police. He said that the police in turn registered an FIR and arrested two agitators.
The jam in Bokaro could be removed after about six hours this evening as local residents resorted to jam on Thursday morning demanding suspension of the officer-in-charge of Petarwal police station.
In view of the communal tension, the police have deployed heavy force in the area. Bokaro Deputy Commissioner Kuldeep Choudhary said a magistrate along with police personnel is monitoring the area while a civil surgeon has been directed to conduct a medical examination of the victim.
Gomia MLA Lambodar Mahto first sat on a dharna at the main gate of the state assembly and later raised the issue in the assembly. Mahto demanded speedy hearing of the matter, which was supported by Hazaribagh MLA Manish Jaiswal.
Giridih MP Chandraprakash Choudhary sat on a dharna at Bokaro Sadar Hospital along with his supporters demanding justice for the victim.
