Minor boy shoots dead mother, 3 siblings ‘under the influence’ of PUBG

In the capital of Pakistan’s Punjab province, a 14-year-old boy shot and killed his entire family, including his mother and two minor sisters, allegedly under the influence of the online game PUBG. Nahid Mubarak, 45- A one-year-old health worker was found dead along with his 22-year-old son Taimur and two daughters aged 17 and 11 years last week in Lahore’s Kehna area.

Police said in a statement that his teenage son, who was left without injuries and is the sole survivor of the family, turned out to be the killer. A PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) addict has confessed to killing his mother and siblings under the influence of the game. The statement said that he has developed some psychological problems due to playing online games for long hours of the day.

Police said that Nahid was a divorcee and would often scold the boy for not paying attention to his studies and spending most of his time playing PUBG. “On the day of the incident, Nahid had scolded the boy in this matter. Later, the boy took out his mother’s pistol from the cupboard and shot her and three other siblings in their sleep.

“The next morning, the boy raised the alarm and the neighbors called the police. The boy told police at the time that he was on the top floor of the house and did not know how his family was murdered, the statement said. Police said the licensed pistol was procured by Nahid for the safety of his family.

He said that the blood-stained clothes of the suspect have been recovered. According to a report in Dawn newspaper, this is the fourth such crime related to online games in Lahore. When the first case came to light in 2020, the then capital police officer Zulfikar Hameed had recommended a ban on the sport to save the lives, time and future of millions of teenagers.

In the last two years, three young players of the game have died by suicide and the police have named PUBG as the cause of death in their report. The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially included gaming disorder as a disease in the International Classification of Diseases.

Gaming disorder is defined as a pattern of behavior characterized by impaired control over gaming (digital or video), prioritizing it over other activities to the extent that gaming takes precedence over other interests and daily activities, and the occurrence of negative consequences regardless of the continuation or enhancement of gaming.
