Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni is not new to controversies

New Delhi: Amid mounting opposition to his resignation over the Lakhimpur Kheri scandal, Minister of State for Home Ajay Mishra Teni on Wednesday courted controversy after a video of him abusing a journalist went viral.

Teni’s son Ashish is also among the 13 accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri violence in October.

“No shame. The media are thieves who have put an accused in jail… Shut down your phone… What do you want to know?” He can be heard saying this in the video going viral.

The incident took place when the Minister of State for Home was attending an event in Lakhimpur Kheri.

Teni, who was earlier a district panchayat member from 2005-10, is not new to controversies as he threatened farmers during a protest before the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.

“You better mend your ways, or we’ll teach you a lesson, it will only take a few minutes,” he reportedly said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP had earlier lost his cool as he threatened a village headman during the “Janata Darbar”.

Mishra, who was elected MLA from Nighasan in Uttar Pradesh in 2012, had declared a criminal case against himself before the elections.

Mishra, who later won the 2014 Lok Sabha election on a BJP ticket from Kheri constituency in Uttar Pradesh, showed a criminal case against him in his election affidavit.

The BJP leader again announced in his 2019 election affidavit that an FIR was registered against him again, but a criminal revision appeal in this regard was filed in the High Court.
