‘Mimi’ review: Definitely Kriti Sanon’s best performance ever

Mumbai: Birthday girl Kriti Sanon brings her best performance till date in surrogacy drama ‘Mimi’. As a gift to her fans, the ‘Adipurush’ actress beautifully portrayed the hero’s role in this Laxman Utekar film. A complete family entertainer – ‘Mimi’ boasts of an excellent casting with talented actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Sai Tamhankar, Supriya Pathak and Manoj Pahwa in lead roles.

‘Mimi’, the official remake of National Award winning Marathi film ‘Mala Aai Whychi’, tells the story of a girl from Jaipur who aspires to be Bollywood’s ‘top heroine’. The film begins with a childless foreign couple looking for a healthy girl in India to carry their child. They reject the girls they meet in Delhi and proceed to Jaipur to continue their search. Pankaj Tripathi (Bhanu), who plays a driver, comes to the rescue of the foreign couple when he takes them to a hotel where they see Mimi (played by Kriti Sanon) acting. John and Summer take a liking to the childless alien couple Mimi and choose her to be the surrogate mother for their child.

On the other hand, Mimi is struggling to raise money by performing in luxury hotels for foreigners and other guests. She does this to move to Mumbai and fulfill her dream of becoming an actress. Well, when John and Summer hint at giving Mimi a lot of money to raise their child, the latter agrees. During her pregnancy, Mimi stays at the house of her best friend Shama (played by Sai Tamhankar) to hide the truth from her family. Upon seeing her stomach, Bhanu goes to Shama’s house with Mimi as her husband to stop raising eyebrows in the society. As Shama’s character is portrayed as a Muslim in the film, Mimi remained under a burqa the entire time and no one could recognize her.

Everything was going well till one day when the fertility clinic revealed that Mimi’s baby was mentally challenged and had Down syndrome. This breaks the real set of parents – John and Summer, who then refuse to accept this child and ask Mimi to abort.

This causes many problems for Mimi who refuses to abort the baby and decides to give birth to the baby. However, things turn ugly when Mimi’s parents and society learn about the truth. As the society will not understand the concept of surrogacy, Bhanu then decides to become the father of the child and save Mimi’s image. But, when Bhanu’s wife reaches Mimi’s house in search of her husband, the real truth comes to the fore.

Well, not only Mimi, everyone else considers the child as their own. Seeing the passion for Hindi films, Mimi decided to name her son ‘Raj’. The child brings a lot of happiness to Mimi’s world and fills the void of Bhanu and his wife being childless for 12 years. Raj becomes the apple of everyone’s eyes and they all live their life happily one day, after 4 years, Raj’s real parents John and Samar come back and demand to take their child with them. We do. It sets off an emotional journey for all the characters in the film as it is beautifully portrayed in ‘Mimi’ that one doesn’t need to give birth to be a real parent. Nevertheless, after going through an upheaval of feelings of romanticizing motherhood, the film ends on a happy note where John and Samar adopt an orphan and decide to leave Raj with Mimi.

‘Mimi’ not only focuses on surrogacy but also throws light on issues like childlessness, orphanage, racism and many more. Kriti Sanon best portrays the emotional battle with herself, society and dreams. Though the film marks Kriti Sanon’s best performance to date, for actors like Pankaj Tripathi, Supriya Pathak and Manoj Pahwa, the script could not do full justice to their scintillating acting skills. Pankaj Tripathi being an artist by his nature, did full justice to his character in the film. He is like fine wine; Just gets better with every performance.

In short, Mimi is a must watch and it is currently streaming on Netflix and Jio Cinema.

Stay tuned for more updates.
