Microwave: Explained: What is the difference between OTG and microwave oven – Times of India

One OTG (oven toaster griller) and a Microwave Ovens have many similar features, which help cook foods that can be made in both devices without much change in the end result. However, the two tools are not the same. So, how do you know which one to buy? Well, let us help you how both are different from each other.
OTG’s functions include baking, grilling and toasting. If a person wants to buy for these purposes only, then he cannot go wrong in opting for OTG for daily use. But again, if you want to cook different types of food in a single appliance, a microwave oven may be a better choice.
how do they work
OTGs are small, portable ovens that do not require additional set-up. Compared to a microwave oven, an OTG uses less electricity and is considered more economical of the two. The device consists of coils, made of nickel/chromium metal alloys, that convert electricity into heat. The heat then helps to cook the food from the inside. Almost all OTGs are designed with knobs to select time, temperature, and switch between features. However, some ovens come with additional features such as a defrost cycle.
On the other hand, a microwave oven is a type of appliance that uses a microwave to heat the food from the inside. So, what are microwaves? Microwaves are a type of electromagnetic wave with a frequency between 300 MHz (0.3GHz) and 300 GHz. Microwave ovens run entirely on electricity and require no additional set-up.
Meal preparation and pre-heating time
Apart from usability, OTG and microwave differ in food preparation and pre-heating time. While OTG uses traditional heatwaves to heat food, microwave ovens use microwaves for heating, which is why they have faster food preparation and pre-heating times than OTGs. In an OTG, the average heating time is around 14 to 15 minutes. However, modern microwave ovens take only 5 to 6 minutes to preheat.
Both Microwave and OTG require no additional setup and are portable to use. All of them just need to be plugged in to turn on. While OTGs are used to cook things like breads and desserts, microwave ovens can not only do it all but also heat food much faster. Most homes have these two appliances and are essential products for almost all kitchens.
