Xbox Mobile App Store needs support from Apple and Google

Apple and Google are facing pressure from the European Union to allow third-party app stores and Microsoft is balking at the changes.

As per the latest reports, Microsoft is steadily building up its plans to enter the mobile gaming ecosystem with its own mobile app store expected to launch in 2024. Xbox chief Phil Spencer has been quoted as saying that the App Store is being built to compete with giants like Google and Apple.

Ever since Microsoft discontinued the Windows Phone platform, it has been out of the mobile segment. Now having an App Store for Xbox on mobile makes a lot of business sense. And it’s easy to see why there’s a lot riding on the Microsoft deal for Activision Blizzard. Xbox could profit immensely from the mobile game titles that come with the acquisition and Spencer has been talking up the App Store this week, suggesting that the deal could eventually happen.

One of the biggest challenges Microsoft has faced with its App Store is how the company can run its App Store on Android or iOS devices. An EU bill is being introduced that forces iOS to allow third-party app stores to run on iPhones, while Google has been ordered to make such changes to show that It is not violating any antitrust laws in many countries.

The EU plans these radical changes under the Digital Markets Act, which could mean users having the freedom to download apps and app stores from other companies onto their smartphones. “The Digital Markets Act that’s coming – those are things we’re planning for, I think it’s a huge opportunity,” Spencer was Quoted Saying by Financial Times.

Microsoft is putting all its eggs in the basket with hopes that the Activision deal will be approved, which according to the report is likely in the European Union, but it may struggle to clear the home market. Either way, users will be pleased to have more options, and Microsoft could finally increase its presence in the mobile gaming segment.
