Microsoft Confirms Hacker Group Stealing Lapsu$ Source Code, Gets Limited Access

A hacker group named Lapsu$ recently cyberattacked tech giant Microsoft, claiming that it stole the source code of several Microsoft products, including Bing, Cortana and others. Now, Microsoft has confirmed the development, saying that the hacker group has gained “limited access” to its systems. The company says it has been tracking Lapsu$’s movements for several weeks. The hacker group was previously involved in breaches at Nvidia, Samsung, and Okta, a US-based user authentication services company.

Microsoft said its investigation found that a single account was compromised, giving the hacker group limited access. “Our cybersecurity response team is engaged to quickly repair the compromised account and prevent further activity. Microsoft does not rely on code confidentiality as a security measure and viewing source code does not increase risk, The company said. Microsoft has classified the hacker group as DEV-0537. “Unlike most activity groups that reside under radar, the DEV-0537 does not cover its tracks,” the company said. “They go as far as announcing their attacks on social media or advertising their intention to buy credit from employees of targeted organizations.”

Hacking group Lapsu$ has been expanding its targets by targeting several large-scale companies over the past few weeks. Microsoft also stated in its blog post that Lapsu$ is also known to hijack cryptocurrency accounts.
