Metro, big cities to see 5G rollout next year – Times of India

New Delhi: Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Chennai will be among the cities that will launch high-speed 5G telecom services in the country next year, the government has said.
It emphasized that the ground work for the launch of latest mobile technology is being completed at a rapid pace.
Work has already begun for auctioning 5G spectrum next year, even as top telcos like Airtel, Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea set up 5G trial sites. These are some of the major cities where buyers are likely to pay more for a faster and more responsive network.
Other cities where testing sites have been set up are Kolkata, Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Gandhi Nagar, the telecom ministry said, as it outlined rollout plans for 5G in the country.
Communications and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav has already said that the relief package announced recently for the telecom industry will enable mobile companies to aggressively participate in network expansion and new age services such as 5G.
The government said indigenization – including telecom infrastructure – will be a key driver that will drive the launch of 5G services in the country. For this, the Telecom Ministry had funded the indigenous 5G test-bed project in top educational institutions, which has now reached its final stage.
The eight agencies working on the project for the last three years are IIT-Bombay, IIT-Delhi, IIT-Hyderabad, IIT-Madras, IIT Kanpur, IISc-Bangalore, SAMEER (Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering Research) and CEWIT. Huh. Center of Excellence in Wireless Technology).
