Facebook’s parent company Meta has announced that it will restore former US President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts in the coming weeks.

On January 7, 2021, Meta suspended Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts for two years after he praised people who engaged in violence at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
“The suspension was an extraordinary decision taken in extraordinary circumstances. The general state of affairs is that the public should be able to hear from the former President of the United States and the declared candidate for that office again on our platform,” Clegg explained in the blog post.
“Like any other Facebook or Instagram user, Mr. Trump is subject to our Community Standards. In light of his violations, he now also faces enhanced penalties for repeat offenses – penalties that apply to other public figures. will apply whose accounts have been reinstated from suspension related to civil unrest under our updated protocol,” he said.
Clegg also said that Meta is reinstating Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, however, with new guardrails to “prevent repeat offences”.
“We know that whatever decision we take on this issue will be sharply criticized. Reasonable people will disagree as to whether this is the right decision. But a decision had to be made, so we’ve tried to make it in the best way that’s consistent with our values and the process we’ve established…,” he stressed.
