Meta Laid off Indian Employees Within 2-3 Days of Their Joining

Some Indian techies, who switched to social media major Meta after quitting their stable jobs two-three days ago, are among the 11,000 people laid off by the company.

Facebook has laid off 11,000 employees worldwide to cut costs.

Neelima Agarwal, an IT professional who joined Meta two days ago, posted on the social media platform LinkedIn that she was among those who had lost their jobs.

“Moved from Canada” India Joined META just a week back and 2 days back after going through such a long visa process. But the unfortunate sad day came and I was fired.”

According to his LinkedIn profile, Neelim quit his two-year job at Microsoft Office in Hyderabad to join Meta.

After working for over three years at the Amazon office in Bengaluru, Vishwajit Jha said he had joined Meta three days ago and has now been laid off.

“I joined META three days ago after waiting for a long visa process. Thank you to everyone who facilitated that transition. Really sad that this happened, my heart goes out to all those affected by the layoffs,” Jha posted.

Indian employees of Meta, the firm that owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, have been thrown off guard after the US firm announced 11,000 layoffs globally, or 13 per cent of its workforce.

While no country-specific numbers have been disclosed yet, Meta’s India employees are looking for clues on their future.

Company officials could not immediately be reached after Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg made public a letter to employees announcing the job cuts.

Zuckerberg has promised 16 weeks of base pay plus two additional weeks for each year of service as a severance package for affected employees.

Raju Kadam, who was part of Meta’s technical team, said he has been in the US for 16 years and never faced job loss. He said, “I have H1-B visa… My clock to leave America starts from today… I have been in America for 16 years and saw the decline in 2008, 2015 (oil) and 2020, but I Never lost my job.” He said that his sons are US citizens and their lives would be affected.

The layoffs at Meta come within a week of massive job cuts at social media platform Twitter.

As part of a cost-cutting exercise, Twitter has reportedly laid off around 7,500 people worldwide, including more than half of the people working for the company in India.
