Mercedes EQG SUV to become the 1st vehicle to get Vision EQXX’s 1,000+km battery tech – Times of India

Earlier in 2022, Mercedes-Benz had made headlines for achieving a range of 1,202 km in a real-world road trip, with their Vision EQXX electric saloon. It did that and broke its own record of 1,008 km that was documented earlier. One of the major reasons behind the EQXX’s astonishing mileage was reported to be a new innovative battery tech that Mercedes-Benz is reportedly planning to bring in the upcoming EQG electric SUV.

The G-wagon’s electric counterpart EQG will reportedly feature Mercedes-Benz’s new silicon content battery technology that has been used in the EQXX prototype. The battery features a silicon anode that contributes to a 20-40 percent increase in energy density when combined with other chemical changes in the cells. The EQXX prototype used a 100kWh battery pack with the revised anode chemistry and a weight of 495kg. Moreover, instead of using liquid cooling that adds weight and lowers efficiency, the prototype’s battery pack relied heavily on air-cooling. It has been developed in collaboration with US-based Sila Nanotechnologies.

From what the report suggests, Mercedes-Benz has done extensive work to the G-wagon’s existing ladder-frame chassis to accommodate the weight of a battery pack in the EQG electric SUV. In order to give the driver an authentic experience, Mercedes-Benz is also said to have developed a software package that triggers electric motors in off-road conditions that simulate the effect of three differential locks similar to the ICE G-Wagon. Overall, the EQG is said to be powered by four electric motors, two powering the front and two integrated into its rear axle assembly. It remains to be seen what kind of range the new battery tech and the challenges created by the EQG’s obvious design constraints will translate into, in real-world conditions.
