Mekedatu Dam controversy: We are going to start work: Yediyurappa

Bangalore/Chennai: As Karnataka and Tamil Nadu face off over the Mekedatu dam dispute, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa met Union Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in Bengaluru on Tuesday and said work for the reservoir would begin.

“I do not want to discuss about Tamil Nadu or any other state. We have every right and we are going to start work.

He said that the Union Minister assured him that all the issues regarding grant of approval from the Center for the implementation of the projects would be resolved.

Shekhawat, on his part, said that all the projects related to Karnataka were discussed in the meeting with Yediyurappa.

He said he has assured Yediyurappa that he will look into the pending projects, especially the Mekedatu dam project.

“I have assured that we will look into the issues related to Karnataka deeply. After studying all these things we will organize a meeting in Delhi.

I assure that the state of Karnataka will get justice.

The meeting took place after the Cauvery Rights Recovery Committee held protests in several parts of the Cauvery delta region in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The protesters burnt Yeddyurappa’s effigies and condemned Karnataka’s efforts to build a dam.

Meanwhile, Communist Party of India (CPI) leader D. Raja said that the Center should create harmony between the two states and resolve the issue amicably.

“(Prime Minister) Modi talks of cooperation and federalism. Where has cooperative federalism gone now?” He told the media in Chennai.
