Mehmood Jayanti: The 5-time actor wins hearts with his brilliant comic timing!

Mahmood Ali, commonly known as Mahmood, was an Indian actor, director and producer, known for his comedic performances in the Hindi cinema industry. During his career spanning four decades, he acted in over 300 Hindi films along with many other actors. He was a major actor in the golden age of Indian cinema, and was well-liked and respected by the audience.

To honor the actor on his birth anniversary on September 29, here’s a look at Mehmood’s comedy films that cemented his status as a comic.

Discovery – 1968

This is one of the must-watch films of Mahmood that will make you laugh. He portrayed the character of a South Indian classical music teacher. In this film, Mahmood as Master Pillai, taught music to Bindu, portrayed by Saira Banu. Mahmud produced Padosan in addition to playing the role.

Pyar Kiye Jaa – 1966

It is one of Mehmood’s Bollywood films which is considered by many to be a classic. Mehmood played the character of Atma, an aspiring filmmaker. Pyaar Kiye Jaa won him the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comic Role for his portrayal of the self. In the film, Mehmood asks his father (Om Prakash, another Bollywood icon) to bankroll a Hindi film that he will produce under the label of Wah Wah Productions.

One of Mahmud’s finest comedy scenes is when he reads the script of his film project to his father.

Kunwara Baap – 1974

Mehmood was nominated for the Filmfare Award for Best Performance in a Comedy Role for his work as Mahesh in Kunwara Baap. Mehmood made the film Kunwara Baap to raise awareness on polio education. He made the picture for his polio victim son Mackie Ali, who is also in it. One of the best scenes ever was when Mahmood was carrying his polio-affected child to a sports tournament and ran towards the finish line.

Gumnaam – 1965

Gumnaam, a drama from Agatha Christie’s 1939 mystery book And Then There Were None, features a multistar cast, but Mehmood’s Hum Kale Hain To Kya Hua is etched in our memories. That was quite the show going around with Helen. Gumnaam won Mehmood the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Mahmud portrays the butler of an abandoned property on an obscure island where seven men were trapped when their plane was forced to make an unexpected landing. Panic ensues as they all end up dying one by one.

Bhoot Bangla – 1965

Mehmood’s directorial debut was Bhoot Bangla, a 1965 Bollywood horror comedy produced by him. He played the role of Mohan Kumar, who somehow investigates the threatening phone calls received by Rekha (Tanuja). A unique film of its kind, Mehmood was hailed as a comic force.
