From Shershaah, Sherni to Sushant Singh Rajput’s Dil Bechara, OTT movies that deserve a theatrical release

Due to the pandemic over the past year and a half, films have skipped theatrical releases for OTT releases. While some films waited for theaters to reopen, many big Bollywood productions had to take the digital route to avoid unfathomable delays. However, the joy of being exposed to a story on the big screen is different. With the Maharashtra government deciding to reopen cinemas from October, filmmakers are announcing release dates one after the other. This also makes us wonder whether some of the big budget movies seen on OTT will get re-released in theatres. So, here we have compiled a list of previously released films which we feel deserve a theatrical release as well.

Shershaah

A tear-jerking climax of drama, love, romance, patriotism, nail-biting fight sequences and Shershaah would have been the perfect mix for theatres. Not only this, the story of Captain Vikram Batra should be shown on the big screen in a grand manner. However, an OTT release did not deter the Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani starrer as the audience showered it with immense love and respect.

Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai

Say what you will about irrational action sequences or story repeats in the film, but a Salman Khan starrer will not ensure a Housefull but a certain section of the audience will literally celebrate the release.

Dil Bechara

Dil Bechara will always hold a special place in our hearts as apart from telling a heartwarming story, this is also the last film of Sushant Singh Rajput. Right after its release on Disney+ Hotstar, it became the highest rated Indian film on IMDb. Hence, one can only imagine the kind of love it will get when it is re-released on the big screen.

Drishyam 2

The prequel, Drishyam and even its Bollywood remake had managed to win over the audience. The anxiety-inducing cat-and-mouse chase between Georgekutty and the police would have managed to keep us on the edge of our seats. Directed by Jeetu Joseph, the Malayalam film stars Mohanlal, South actress Meena, Ansiba Hassan and others.

the big bull

After seeing Prateek Gandhi rocking the character of Harshad Mehta in the web series, it would have been great to see Abhishek Bachchan playing his version of the stockbroker in theatres. The Big Bull revolved around the financial frauds committed by stockbroker Harshad Mehta in the 90s. It also starred Ileana D’Cruz.

Vidya Balan’s lioness and Shakuntala Devi

With the rise of OTT, we have seen many filmmakers experimenting with different risky stories. With the artistic freedom of this platform, the actors also did not shy away from showcasing their diversity. And all that was missing from theatres. So, at such times, a female-centric film like Shakuntala Devi, which was led by Vidya Balan with a stellar cast, would have been a treat to watch on the big screen. The same logic applies to the actor’s recent film, Lioness.

ludo

Trust Anurag Basu to come up with something new whenever he makes a film. The same was the case for Ludo, which is backed by an ensemble cast including some of the stellar actors of the industry like Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sanya Malhotra, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Rohit Saraf, Pearle Mane and more. other. The director was praised for seamlessly weaving the four complex stories so that the characters or subplots don’t look messy, and unfold in the most natural way possible.

Sarpatta Parambrai

Sarpatta Parambrai is another great Tamil film to release this year, which pulled out of a theatrical release due to the pandemic. To gauge its impact and popularity, the Pa Ranjith directorial became the most-watched Tamil film of the year on Amazon Prime Video, where it was released. It depicts the boxing culture of 1970s Chennai and the politics mixed with it.
