The BJP, which fielded star campaigners including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief JP Nadda and Shah, managed to win only two seats in the state.

In the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) Meghalaya It emerged as the single largest party in the state on Thursday, winning 26 of the 59 seats that went to polls on February 27.

Though the party fell short of a majority, strong indications suggest that they will work on a plan to form the government in the state.

Sources say the party will get the support of three more MLAs by afternoon and an announcement will be made at a press conference later today.

The BJP, which fielded star campaigners including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, party chief JP Nadda and Shah, managed to win only two seats in the state.

Sources tell News18 that Conrad Sangma, the top contender for the post of CM, spoke to Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sharma before the election results. After the exit polls, Sangma had reportedly said that he wanted the support of a stable party and hinted at an alliance with the BJP.

Experts say it was Sangma’s personal contacts and strategic planning that helped the NPP.

Historically, political parties rarely emerge as the single largest party with a majority. Most reports suggested that the trend would continue in the 2023 elections as well.

Experts say that the fight for majority was not easy for NPP. While it had the full support of the BJP, it was the TMC that proved to be a tough competition for the NPP by buying heavyweight Mukul Sangma from the Congress.

The party claims that his development work and extensive campaign to project TMC as an outsider’s party may have helped.

Speaking to News18 ahead of polling, Sangma said, “TMC projected BJP as a “Bihari” party in Bengal, same way they are outsiders in Meghalaya.”

Although the initial trends gave an early lead to the TMC, the NPP won later.
