Meet UPSC Civil Services Rank 1 holder Shubham Kumar, IIT-Bombay alumnus

The All India Rank (AIR) 1 in the UPSC Civil Services Examination has been secured by Shubham Kumar of Bihar. He hails from Katihar district of Bihar. He is an alumnus of IIT-Bombay. Kumar holds a BTech degree from IIT-Bombay. He did his BTech in Civil Engineering from IIT-Bombay.

This is his third attempt in civil services. Kumar had also cleared the civil services exam in 2019, though he had secured 290th rank at that time. In 2019, he had chosen Anthropology as an optional subject. He had attempted in 2018 also, however, he could not clear the exam at that time.

He had worked as a researcher in the United States. He quit his job and started preparing for UPSC Civil Services. He said that after his experience in the United States, he found that there are many gaps in India and he wanted to work towards the development of the nation, he had earlier said in an interview.

Less than an hour after the results were declared, the best of luck started pouring in for Kumar. Rural Development and Panchayati Raj Minister Shandilya Giriraj Singh has congratulated Kumar on his success.

Kumar’s father works in a bank. Talking to local media, Shubham has said that he wants to work for the development of rural India and would prefer to work in Bihar cadre, however, he is open to other cadres as well. UPSC has not yet allotted the cadre to the eligible candidates.
