McIlroy’s victory in Las Vegas; Janzen secures second senior title

LAS VEGAS: Rory McIlroy kicked off a big weekend in Las Vegas on Sunday by overtaking Ricky Fowler and stopping Colin Morikawa to win the CJ Cup in the summit clash for his 20th PGA Tour title.

McIlroy seized control with a 35-foot eagle putt from the green on the par-5 14th and then was playing fault-free for a 6-under 66 and a one-off win.

McIlroy is the 39th player on the PGA Tour to win at least 20 times, and his fifth consecutive PGA Tour season with at least one win.

Fowler, who started the final round with a two-shot lead as he tried to end nearly three years without a win, faded with a pair of three-putts and scored 71 to tie for third. Gaya. Carey, NC: Lee Janzen makes a 20-foot birdie putt on the first hole of the playoffs with Miguel Angel Jimenez to win the PGA Tour Champions SAS Championship.

Janzen, 57, finished par-4 18th in regulation, catching a putt from the fringe, in a 5-under 67 final in the regular-season finale. The two-time US Open champion won the 2015 ACE Group Classic for his only other senior title.

Jimenez finished with 69 to match Janzen at 12-under 204 at Prestonwood Country Club. The 57-year-old Spanish player has 10 senior victories to his name. He hit his approach over the green in the playoffs and clinched a leg before Genzen emerged the winner.

Jim Furyk (67) and Alex Sejka (70) were one stroke backs.

The top 72 players on the money list advanced to the playoffs, with Monday’s qualifier Jaydi jumping from 82nd to 72nd. Davis Love III is ranked 20th to go from 75th to 71st.

SOTOGRANDE, Spain: Matt Fitzpatrick won the Andaluca Masters by three shots, finishing with 2-under 69 at Valderrama.

The 27-year-old Englishman finished at 6-under 278. He is the fourth youngest Englishman after Peter Osterhuis, Lee Westwood and Nick Faldo to reach seven European Tour victories.

Australia’s Min Woo Lee and Sweden’s Sebastian Soderbergh finished second. Each of them shot 70.
