MCD releases helpline number to counter ‘misconceptions’ about anti-encroachment drive

Officials said to counter “misunderstandings” about the demolition drive carried out in the capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi on Thursday released a helpline number on which people can seek clarification on their encroachment removal action. The move comes after the Aam Aadmi Party alleged that the MCD is “targeting the poor” through demolition drives across the city. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal held a meeting with all AAP MLAs on May 16 and asked them to oppose such demolition drives.

Kejriwal accused the BJP of “misusing” power, saying the demolition drive in Delhi would leave 63 lakh people homeless and would be the “biggest catastrophe” in independent India. A public notice issued in this regard said a “misleading campaign” has been launched recently that the civic body will demolish buildings and shops in unauthorized colonies.

“It is clarified that MCD has no such plan. Encroachments are being removed from the parks and roads only because the people of Delhi have the right to keep the roads, parks and clean surroundings clean and hygienic. Said it. The notice states that MCD is and will always be in the service of the people of Delhi.

“Citizens are requested not to fall prey to any such misleading campaign,” the civic body said in the notice. An MCD official said the need to issue such a notice was because the opposition parties were making a “false statement” of the MCD by targeting the poor under the guise of encroachment drive.

“These allegations are not true. Encroachment removal action is planned only to clear the occupied government land and roads. In case of doubt, people can call on the given number for any encroachment or vandalism drive done in their area. Earlier this month, violence-hit Jahangirpuri, Shaheen Bagh, Madanpur Khadar, New Friends Colony, Mangolpuri, Rohini by erstwhile North, East and South municipal bodies in different parts of the city, the official said. Several anti-encroachment campaigns were carried out in Gokulpuri, Lodhi Colony, Janakpuri, Hari Nagar etc. The local authorities faced protests from the local people against the campaign in Shaheen Bagh, Madanpur Khadar and Jahangirpuri.

AAP had accused the BJP, which earlier governed the three municipalities, of targeting the poor through such campaigns. On Wednesday, the MCD launched an anti-encroachment drive in southwest Delhi’s Naraina industrial area as officials rushed to the spot with bulldozers and removed illegal temporary structures, including dhabas, shops, kiosks. AAP leader Durgesh Pathak hit out at the MCD over the campaign in Narayana Industrial Area and alleged that the civic body “demolished” several shops without giving notice to the shopkeepers.
