New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party is currently leading in 60 seats, BJP is leading in 48 seats. Congress, which has won four seats so far, is leading in five seats and independent candidates are leading in two seats. Counting is on for 250 wards. AAP workers are seen dancing and celebrating at the party office in New Delhi. His party has won 78 seats and is ahead in 56 others, according to official trends. The counting of votes is still going on. Latest results and trends show that Aam Aadmi Party has crossed the magic mark of 126 in the MCD elections, but BJP’s lead was marginal. The MCD has 250 wards, and the simple majority mark is 126. Independent candidate Shakeela Begum has won the Seelampur seat in Northeast Delhi. The counting of votes started at eight in the morning. This was the first election after the reunification of the MCD earlier this year.

In 2017, the BJP won 181 of the 270 municipal wards, while the AAP won only 48 and the Congress came third with 30. AAP’s chief spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj expressed confidence that his party would win. He told the media at the party office, “We will win more than 180 seats. We have decorated our office… The BJP did not cite any achievements of its 15-year tenure in the MCD during the election campaign.”

BJP on exit poll

BJP’s national spokesperson Shahzad Poonawala said that the exit polls are completely wrong. “Even after 15 years of BJP rule, the party has retained its vote share on the basis of its work. People should avoid premature celebrations,” he told reporters. Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta said, “Despite 15 years of anti-incumbency, our performance is better. We worked for the people of Delhi in the municipal corporations but maybe some people were not happy. No anger against BJP though was.” Delhi BJP Vice President Virendra Sachdeva said that it is going to be a tough fight.

“However, we will prove the exit polls wrong and BJP will come to power in MCD for the fourth consecutive term,” he said. The AAP office here was in a festive mood with patriotic songs blaring over loudspeakers and the entire campus decorated with colorful balloons. Nervous but hopeful AAP workers glued their eyes to the LED screens as the latest counting trends emerged. They are also keeping a tab on social media and some of them are seen tweeting incessantly as the office gets finalized to celebrate the party’s maiden win in the municipal polls here.

aap party workers for election

A party worker hoisted blue and yellow balloons at the office and said, “Aap hi aayegi MCD me is baar humko bharosa hai.” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to address the people after the results. High-stakes elections for 250 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) took place on 4 December, with the electoral fate of 1,349 candidates being locked in the voting machine. There was 50.48 percent voting in the election. The outcome of this election, which is broadly billed as a triangular contest between a spirited AAP, a confident BJP and an optimistic Congress, could have ramifications beyond the national capital.
