Who will rule the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, BJP or Aam Aadmi Party, it will be decided today. All preparations for the counting of votes have been completed. The counting of votes will start at 8 am. Counting of votes will take place at 42 centres. Keeping in view the security arrangements, 20 companies of paramilitary forces and more than 10,000 personnel of Delhi Police have been deployed at the counting centres.
Polling was held on December 4 for 250 wards of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. According to the Election Commission, this time around 50% voting has taken place. In 2017, the voter turnout was 53.55%. That is, if we compare the figures so far, this time there has been less voting by three percent.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has been occupied by the BJP for the last 15 years, but this time the Aam Aadmi Party is seen making a clean sweep here in the exit polls. According to the exit polls of India Today-Axis My India and Times Now-ETG, the AAP government is likely to be formed with a thumping majority in the MCD. BJP is on the second number and Congress seems to be almost completely wiped out.
AAP gets 149-171 seats in exit polls
According to the India Today-Axis My India survey, AAP is likely to get 149 to 171, BJP 69 to 91 and Congress 3 to 7 out of the total 250 seats in the MCD. AAP’s figure is much higher than the figure of majority i.e. 126 seats.
Congress does not have a single seat in the Lok Sabha-Assembly
The BJP had won all seven seats in the 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections in Delhi, while the Congress and the AAP could not even open their accounts. In the 2020 assembly elections, out of 70 seats, AAP got 62 seats and BJP got 8 seats, whereas in 2015 assembly elections, AAP got 67 seats and BJP got 3 seats. Congress did not get a single seat in the 2020 and 2015 assembly elections.
1,349 candidates entered the fray
1349 candidates are in the fray for the MCD elections 2022. Of these, 709 were women candidates. BJP and AAP fielded their candidates in all 250 seats, while 247 candidates of Congress contested. JDU fielded candidates on 23 seats, while AIMIM fielded candidates on 15 seats.
BSP fielded 174 candidates, NCP 29, Indian Muslim League 12, Communist Party of India (CPI) 3, All India Forward Bloc 4 and SP, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) one seat each. Apart from this, there were 382 independent candidates.
Voting was held at 13,638 polling stations
The Election Commission had set up 13,638 polling stations across Delhi. About 1 lakh employees were deployed in these. For the convenience of voters, 68 model polling stations and 68 pink polling stations were set up. A total of 40 thousand soldiers were deployed at these polling booths. 56,000 EVM machines were used in the election. The Election Commission had installed CCTVs at the booths for transparent voting.
How does MCD work?
- Providing facilities to the public. This includes health facilities, cleaning of roads, footpaths and markets, licensing of e-rickshaws, rickshaws and carts.
- Operation of primary schools and construction-maintenance of public places like roads, over bridges, public toilets.
- Water supply, drainage system management, development works in slum areas.
- Maintenance of parks, libraries, street lights and parking areas. MCD also gives contracts for many parking lots.
- Solid waste management is one of the essential functions of the MCD, which involves ensuring that waste is collected from every household and from collection points.
- The job of the MCD is to ensure that the construction of buildings is done according to the guidelines laid down by it.
- The MCD is responsible for running the cremation grounds and keeping records of births and deaths.
Why is MCD so important in Delhi politics?
There are three power centers of Delhi’s power. Delhi Government, Central Government and MCD. The powers of the central government will remain with him only. Now suppose there are governments of opposition parties in Delhi and in the center, then the ruling party in the center wants the MCD to remain with it and it can regulate Delhi according to its own. On the other hand, the Delhi government wants that if the MCD also comes under its control, it will be able to develop more freely and on its own terms.
