Shardul Thakur, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravi Shastri were honored for the Gabba Test win at the annual Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Awards held at BKC Club

India cricketers Shardul Thakur, Ajinkya Rahane and former head coach Ravi Shastri were honored during the annual Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) Awards was held on Friday (January 6) at BKC Club, Mumbai. All three were awarded for their heroics in the Gabba Test in which the team India beat Australia at the iconic ‘The Gabba’ venue in Brisbane during the four-match Test series to capture the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2020-21.

The official Instagram page of MCA shared a picture of the trio receiving the award and captioned it as “The GABA Winners”.

India’s victory at the Gabba was one of the most iconic victories, before Australia had gone undefeated at this venue in a Test match for 32 years. They last lost to the West Indies in 1988 and since then there has been no competition for the Australian team at the venue.

India were in a very difficult position as they were plagued by injuries and needed 328 runs to chase. No team had ever scored 329 runs to win a Test match in Brisbane. A draw was enough for India to retain the series title as the current holders. But, on the final day of the final Test, India came out with a very different mindset. Led by the efforts of Shubman Gill (91), Rishabh Pant (89*) and Cheteshwar Pujara (56), the high-spirited team breached the fort and marched off in pride with the Border Gavaskar Trophy. He ended the match with three overs to spare and secured a memorable 2–1 victory.

Shardul Thakur produced an impressive all-round performance of 67 and 2 with the bat and 3/94 and 4/61 with the ball. In the first innings, he shared a 123-run partnership for the seventh wicket with Washington Sundar (62) when India were struggling at 186/6.

Rahane was leading the team in Virat Kohli’s absence, and contributed with scores of 37 and 24 as well. At that time, Ravi Shastri was the head coach of India, who guided the young team to a historic victory. The Gabba Test win will be remembered for the ages as India achieved it from a position where hardly any team would have thought of leveling it with a draw.

However, it is to be noted that India will now look to defend the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home from February 9 in a four-match series.
