The Israeli government has expressed grief over this on Wednesday. Iconic Bollywood actor Dilip Kumar passes away, and offered “heartfelt condolences and prayers” to his family and friends.

In a brief tweet posted from its ‘Israel in India’ account, the Israeli government described Dilip Kumar as a “great actor… also famous and admired in Israel”.

“We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of legendary Indian actor Dilip Kumar.from. He was famous and admired even in Israel. We extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his family and friends,” the message read.

The message also included a line in Hindi: “May his soul rest in peace.”

Dilip Kumar – born Yusuf Khan (he changed his name early in his career) – passed away this morning at Hinduja Hospital in Mumbai after a prolonged illness. He was 98 years old.

A tweet posted from the actor’s official handle – by family friend Faisal Farooqui – read: “With a heavy heart and deep sorrow, I announce the passing of my dear Dileep Saab few moments ago. We are from God and return to Him.”

The actor’s death has triggered an avalanche of tributes from across the country, with politicians, scholars, athletes, artists and his fellow actors posting messages honoring his memory and legacy.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind were also among those who tweeted..

“Dilip Kumarfrom Will be remembered as a cinematic legend. He was blessed with unparalleled talent, due to which generations of audience were mesmerized. His passing is a loss to our cultural world. Condolences to his family, friends and countless fans. RIP,” the PM said.

“Dilip Kumar summarizes the history of emerging India in his own right. The actor’s charm transcended all boundaries, and he was loved across the subcontinent. With his demise, an era ends. Dilip Saab Will live forever in the heart of India. Condolences to the family and countless fans,” the president said.

Amitabh Bachchan, Dilip Kumar’s co-star in Shakti, tweeted: “An institution gone… Whenever the history of Indian cinema is written, it will always be ‘before Dilip Kumar, and after Dilip Kumar’…my May his soul rest in peace and give strength to the family to bear this loss.”

Actor Farhan Akhtar tweeted, “Deepest condolences to Saira.from (His wife of over five decades, Saira Bhanu Khan) and family. RIP @TheDilipKumar Saab“, along with a beautiful picture of the actor and a caption that read: “RIP Yusuf Saab/Dilip Kumar”.

Yusuf Khan, or Dilip Kumar, appeared in some of the most iconic films of Indian cinema, including Naya Daurhandjob Mughal-e-Azamhandjob devdashandjob Ram Aur Shyamhandjob stylehandjob Madhumati and Ganga Jamuna.

A charismatic presence on and off screen, he received several awards including Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award.

He also received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, Pakistan’s highest civilian award.

He will be cremated at 5 pmMaharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s office said, and his state funeral will be performed.
