Educationist Manoj Soni will take oath as the chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) today, an official said. Soni, who joined the commission as a member on June 28, 2017, is performing the duties of UPSC chairman with effect from April 5, 2022, he said on Monday.

“He will be administered the oath of office and secrecy by Smita Nagaraj, the senior-most member in the commission, on Tuesday,” the official said.

UPSC conducts Civil Services Examination (UPSC CSE) to select officers for Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Foreign Service (IFS) and Indian Police Service (IPS) among others.

Prior to his appointment to UPSC, Soni had served as Vice-Chancellor thrice. These include two consecutive terms as Vice-Chancellor of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University (BAOU), Gujarat from August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2015; and a stint as VC of the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda (MSU of Baroda) from April 2005 to April 2008, according to his official resume.

It said that at the time of joining MSU of Baroda, Soni was the youngest Vice-Chancellor in India and MSU.

A scholar of political science with expertise in the study of international relations, he has taught international relations at the Sardar Patel University (SPU), Vallabh Vidyanagar, between 1991 and 2016, except for periods when he served as vice-chancellor of the two universities. did.

Sony has earned many awards and recognitions. In 2013, he was awarded the rare honor of “Honorary Mayor-President of the City of Baton Rouge” by the Mayor-President of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA for his exemplary leadership in empowering the underprivileged sections of the society with IT literacy .

In 2015, the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, London, UK awarded him the World Education Congress Global Award for Distance Learning Leadership.

Soni has served on the Board of Governors of several institutions of higher education and public administration in the past.

He was also a member of a quasi-judicial body constituted by an Act of the Gujarat Legislature that regulates the fee structure of unaided professional institutions in Gujarat, according to his resume.

An Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer and another from the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) will soon join the UPSC as members, an official said without sharing more details.
