Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal did not get BJP ticket from Panaji, the party said talks for one more seat

The BJP on Thursday released its final list for the upcoming Goa elections and what immediately caught everyone’s attention was the election of late Chief Minister and Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar’s son Utpal Parrikar from the Panjim seat.

Utpal had recently questioned the BJP’s ticket distribution process in the coastal state after the leadership indicated that the party’s ticket for the Panaji constituency would be given to Atanasio ‘Babush’ Monserrate. “Will the party give ticket to a person with criminal history in the constituency represented by the late Manohar Parrikar?” He asked, apparently referring to Monserrate.

On January 16, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the BJP central leadership is in touch with Utpal Parrikar and the issue will be resolved soon. He said top officials were aware of Utpal Parrikar’s intention to contest from his father’s constituency.

Utpal wants to contest from Panjim assembly constituency and our central leadership is fully aware about it. They are in touch with Utpal and they will work out a solution.”

However, the “outreach” suffered a setback when former Maharashtra chief minister and BJP’s Goa in-charge for assembly elections Devendra Fadnavis said that being Manohar Parrikar’s son was not enough to get a ticket from the BJP.

Interestingly, Utpal got the support of AAP and Sanjay Raut of Shiv Sena. While Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal invited him to join the Aam Aadmi Party, Raut urged non-BJP parties to support Utpal’s bid for the polls. “If #UtpalParrikar contests as an independent from Panaji seat, I propose to support his candidature to all non-BJP parties including @AamAadmiParty @INCIndia @AITCofficial @Goaforwardparty and not field candidates against him. This will be a true tribute to Manoharbhai!” Raut tweeted.

Reacting to Utpal’s omission, the BJP said that Utpal was given two options. “They have rejected one and talks are on for the other seat,” he said.
