Manish Tewari supports Agneepath, here are 10 other instances when opposition leaders praised Modi government

Narendra Modi The government’s Agneepath scheme for recruiting soldiers into the Army, Navy and Air Force has been seen as a major overhaul of the decades-old selection process, largely on a short-term contract basis of four years.

Under the scheme, youth in the age group of 17-and-a-half to 23 years will be included in all the three services. After completion of the tenure of four years, the scheme has a provision to retain 25% of the recruits for regular service. The government has said that the new model will not only bring new capabilities to the armed forces but also open avenues for youth in the private sector.

Agnipath The plan has also received support from unexpected quarters, with Congress leader Manish Tewari terming it as “a much-needed reform in the right direction”.

“It is a reform that is much needed and it is a reform in the right direction,” Tiwari said. “I sympathize with the youth who are concerned about the Agneepath recruitment process. reality is India There is a need for a young armed force with a light human footprint on state-of-the-art weaponry technology,” he said. However, he said in a tweet that the armed forces should not have an “employment guarantee programme”.

While Tiwari’s support for the plan raised eyebrows at a time of turmoil for the Congress, News18 takes another example when opposition leaders surprised observers with praise for the Modi government.

Amarinder Singh

Captain Amarinder Singh had quit the Congress last year after he was removed as the chief minister of Punjab. Starting the Punjab Lok Congress, he joined hands with the BJP for the 2022 Punjab elections, but his cordial relationship with the PM was a thorn in the Congress’s side even when he was the Chief Minister.

At the height of tension with the Congress leadership in August last year, Amarinder Singh had praised the restoration of Jallianwala Bagh by the central government.

“I don’t know what has been removed. It looks great to me,” the captain said a day later Rahul Gandhi The reconstructed look was dubbed an “insult to the martyrs”.

Ghulam Nabi Azadi

In February 2021, days after retiring from the Rajya Sabha, Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad raised eyebrows in Jammu with praise for PM Narendra Modi.

“I like many things about many leaders. I am from the village and feel proud. Our prime minister also comes from the village and used to sell tea. Although we are political rivals, I appreciate that. He does not hide his true form,” Azad had said while addressing a gathering in Jammu. His statement came a day after a group of 23 leaders in the Congress reiterated their demand for organizational elections and systemic change.

The PM had given Azad a tearful farewell in the Rajya Sabha a fortnight ago. “Whoever takes over from him will have to meet the high standards set by him. He took care of the interest of not only his party but also the House and the country,” the PM had said.

Interestingly, in February this year, Azad’s nephew Mubashir Azad joined the BJP saying he was “impressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s development work at the grassroots level”.

Sharad Pawar

PM Modi has repeatedly expressed his admiration and respect for the Maratha strongman in public meetings. In December last year, NCP chief Sharad Pawar, whose party is an alliance partner in Maharashtra with Shiv Sena and Congress, praised the PM’s style of functioning, saying that once he does a task, he makes sure that May it be complete.

He also said that Modi’s style of taking his allies along is something that was missing in former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s style.

“His nature is such that once he takes up any task, he makes sure that he will not stop until it (work) is finished. He has a good grip on the administration and this is his strong point.

deve Gowda

HD Deve Gowda’s admiration for PM Modi has its origins in the challenge given by the former prime minister ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Deve Gowda had announced that if BJP came to power on its own with 276 seats, he would resign from the Lok Sabha.

Recalling Himmat at a press conference in December 2021, Gowda said: “I told him that if you win 276 seats, I will resign. You can rule in alliance with others, but if you win 276 seats on your own, I will resign (from Lok Sabha).

When the BJP stunned election pundits with an absolute majority of 282 seats in the Lok Sabha, Gowda said he felt the urge to follow through. “I told him I stood by my words. Please accept my resignation. He told me why I was taking what I said during elections so seriously. He also said that he would need to discuss matters with me whenever the situation arises,” Gowda said, adding that his respect for Modi “had increased manifold that day”.

In March this year, Gowda had praised Modi’s dedicated election effort, rejecting an alliance with the BJP for 2023. He said, ‘PM Modi is fighting in every corner of the country to bring BJP to power. He takes up the election work with full dedication,” the former PM had said.

JaiRam Ramesh

At the release of a book in August 2019, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh spread wings when he said that Modi’s governance model “is not a completely negative story” and said that not recognizing his work and calling him a “monster” all the time. “Doing it won’t help.

Ramesh had said that the time has come for us to recognize Modi’s work and the work done by him between 2014 and 2019, which brought him back to power by “more than 30 per cent of the electorate”. He also told how successful the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUJ) was for the Prime Minister.

Ramesh’s statement did not go down well with a section of Congress, with party veteran KK Tiwari claiming that some “self-promotional” leaders in the Congress had “hijacked” the party.

Shashi Tharoor

Jairam Ramesh’s statement on PM Modi found support from Shashi Tharoor, who said praising the prime minister for doing the right thing would give credence to the opposition’s criticism.

“As you know, I have argued for six years now that Narendra Modi should be praised whenever he does or does the right thing, which adds to the credibility of our criticisms whenever he makes a mistake. . Tharoor had said on August 23, 2019 that I welcome others in the opposition, for whom I was encouraged at the time.

Tharoor again praised the Modi government in August 2021 for the co-win platform, this time. “I have always accepted and praised the government when it deserves it. As a critic of #Cowin, I would say they have done something very good. Send @WhatsApp message “Download Certificate” to 90131 51515, OTP Receive and get your vaccination certificate back by @WhatsApp. Simple and fast! (sic),” Tharoor said in a tweet.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi

Abhishek Manu Singhvi had joined Tharoor in defending Jairam Ramesh’s praise for prime minister in 2019.

Taking to Twitter, Singhvi had said: “Always saying Modi is wrong. He is not only the PM of the nation but the unilateral opposition really helps him. Actions are always good, bad and indifferent—they should be judged by the issue and not the individual. Surely the Ujjwala scheme is one of the other good works.

Anand Sharma

Former Union Minister and Congress leader Anand Sharma stepped down from the company line in December 2020 when he praised PM Narendra Modi for personally reviewing the development of COVID-19 vaccines in Ahmedabad, Hyderabad and Pune.

“Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Serum Institute, Bharat Biotech and Zydus Cadila was a recognition of Indian scientists and their work in creating a vaccine for COVID-19, which alone will boost the morale of the frontline warriors and reassure the nation,” Deputy Leader of Rajya Sabha In the opposition said.

Within a few weeks, he again lauded the Modi government for its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at the 93rd Annual Meeting of Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), Sharma said: “Despite the challenge, we were not overwhelmed, we as a nation responded with grit. The credit for this is our people. , goes to our society and government. We all came together as a nation to respond to a situation that was beyond us. And equally, I would say that I am proud that this country is not only We are in a position to manufacture but also export ventilators, PPE kits, masks.

Contrary to his party colleagues, Sharma had lauded the Ministry of External Affairs for the evacuation of Indian nationals from war-torn Ukraine in March this year.

Majeed Memon

NCP leader Majeed Memon’s praise for PM came in March this year when ministers in the Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress government in Maharashtra faced fire from central probe agencies. News agency PTI quoted Memon as saying that the opposition should study the reasons behind Modi and BJP winning the elections.

“If Narendra Modi wins the mandate and he is also shown as the most popular leader of the world, then he will have some qualities or good works which are not available to the opposition leaders,” he said.

Memon told PTI that the opposition should introspect why Modi keeps getting such a “positive mandate” and dismissed suggestions of EVM manipulation, a frequent complaint by the Congress and other political parties.

Abdullakutty

Former Kannur MP AP Abdullakutty, who is now in the BJP, has been expelled from two parties – CPM and Congress – for praising PM Modi. Abdullakutty was first expelled from the Left in 2009, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat, when he expressed admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Kutty later joined the Congress and was twice elected to the state assembly.

The Congress expelled him from the party on June 3, 2019, after praising the Prime Minister for the massive victory of the BJP-led NDA in the 2019 general elections.
