Manipur women video case: One more arrested amid massive manhunt

manipur women video: Manipur Police has arrested one more accused in the woman video case, which has sparked anger and outrage across the country. He is the fifth accused and has been identified as Yumlembam Nungsithoi Meitei. Police told that he is 19 years old.

So far, the police have arrested a total of five accused in the heinous incident, in which two women were paraded naked and later physically assaulted.

Two Kuki women were paraded naked, assaulted and gang-raped by a mob in violence-hit Manipur. The incident took place on May 4 in Bi Phanom village. Around 3 pm, 800-1000 miscreants carrying weapons entered Bi Phenom village in Kangpokpi district.

The state police had by Thursday caught all the four accused, including the main accused, Huairem Herodas. In the 26-second long clip, Herodas can be seen inappropriately touching a nude woman. Apart from this, 12 other accused in the video have also been identified and efforts are on to nab them.

Twelve joint teams of Manipur Police and Central forces are engaged to nab other accused in the case. According to the police, Herodas incited the crowd to take out a procession with the victims.

The video surfaced this week and sent shockwaves across the country, showing girls from the Kuki community being forced to strip by armed men. According to a report in the Indian Express, one of the victims alleged that the police were with the mob that allowed the mob to take away the girls.

The Manipur Police earlier posted a tweet and said, “A case of kidnapping, gangrape and murder was registered at Nongpok Sekmai Police Station (Thoubal district) in connection with the viral video of two women being paraded naked by unidentified armed miscreants on May 4. Investigation is underway.”
