Ponniyin Selvan is a historical action-drama film franchise, based on Kalki Krishnamurthy’s 1995 novel of the same name. The first installment of the two-part franchise revolves around the early life of the Chola prince Arulmozhi Varman, who later became a legendary emperor and ruled from 974 to 1014.

Both the parts of the film have been shot at various locations across India. Some sequences were also shot in Thailand. The music for the films is composed by AR Rahman, while their cinematography and editing are handled by A. Sreekar Prasad and Thota Tharani, respectively.
