MANGALURU: The regional commissioner, Mysuru, will hold elections for the posts of the 23rd term mayor, deputy mayor and chairpersons of the four standing committees of Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), on September 9.
The state government had made a notification announcing reservations for the posts of 24th term mayors and deputy mayors, in all city corporations in the state. However, elections for the 23rd mayor and deputy mayor were not held in the MCC. The tenure of Premanand Shetty of the BJP, as the 22nd mayor in the MCC, had ended on March 1. However, since elections to the post of mayor, deputy mayor and standing committees were not held, Shetty has been continuing as the mayor in the MCC.
The urban development department had made a notification on August 24, announcing reservations for the posts of mayors and deputy mayors, for the 24th tenure in 10 city corporations in the state. Accordingly, the posts of mayor and deputy mayor for the 24th tenure in the MCC, are reserved for general and general woman categories, respectively.
However, now the MCC has to conduct the 23rd tenure’s election. The government had reserved the post of 23rd mayor for the general category in the MCC. Meanwhile, the deputy mayor’s post is reserved for a backward class ‘A’ woman candidate. Hence, an election for the post of mayor and deputy mayor will be held in the MCC, at 12 noon on September 9, as per the reservation announced for the 23rd tenure.
MCC commissioner Akshy Sridhar had sought a clarification from the regional commissioner’s office, regarding the election for the 23rd tenure. The BJP had secured an absolute majority in the election for the MCC, held in 2019. While the BJP has won 44 out of the 60 wards, the Congress has bagged 14 wards, and two seats were bagged by the SDPI.
