Mangaluru: Mangaluru City Police has arrested two people including MBBS final year student and seized 1.2 kg hydro weed from them.
City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar said on Wednesday that the police arrested both the accused after stopping a car near Deralakatte.
Hydroweed is suspected to have been procured from a European country.
The arrested accused are 27-year-old Meenu Rashmi, a final year MBBS student from Kanyakumari, Surathkal, and 24-year-old Ajmal Thota, a BBA graduate from Mangalpadi in Kasaragod district. Kerala. The accused were produced in the court and Ajmal has been taken into police custody for investigation. Police also recovered a car and two mobile phones from the accused.
DCP Hariram Shankar said that depending on the quality of hydro weed, its market price starts from Rs 2,000 and can go up to Rs 25,000 per gram.
Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) will be consulted to ascertain the value of the seized product.
Police are also looking for another accused, a doctor from Kasaragod, who is currently abroad and was part of the team that procured Hydroweed.
Hydroponic weed refers to any cannabis that is grown without the use of soil. Instead of the natural nutrients found in the soil, growers use other nutrients during the growth process and use different farming methods.
The commissioner said that the police teams are working round the clock to eliminate the problem of drug addiction in the city.
“After Bengaluru, it is probably the only city that has a wide variety of drug-related cases. Due to its price, hydro weed is usually consumed occasionally by users, and it is suspected that the accused may have purchased it for distribution among students in Kasaragod and Mangaluru. In the coming days, with the colleges likely to reopen, the vigil will be increased. All the cases found are being closely investigated and action is being taken on them.”
