The 24-year-old, who can also play in midfield, will be manager Erik ten Haag’s third signing after the arrival of Dutch left-back Tyrell Malasia and Danish midfielder Christian Eriksson.

Ten Haag coached Martinez for three seasons at Ajax after moving to the Netherlands from Argentina side Defense y Justicia in May 2019. Martinez made 118 appearances for the Dutch club.

A new defender was seen as a priority for United after their struggle last season. He scored 57 goals in the last stint, the most in the top six of the Premier League and 31 more than champions Manchester City.
