Officials said on Wednesday (February 15) that a case has been registered at East Delhi’s Geeta Colony police station after a zero FIR was transferred from Kohima where a man allegedly impersonated Union Minister Hardeep Puri and Message sent to BJP spokesperson.

He said the police questioned a laborer living in Geeta Colony and believe he could be a victim of cyberattack. He said that his WhatsApp account could have been hacked by criminals, who used the minister’s photo as a profile picture to send messages.

According to the police, a zero FIR—which refers to an FIR registered at a police station when the place of offense is outside its jurisdiction—was on February 3 (Friday) under sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Information Technology. was registered under ACT in Kohima, Nagaland and shifted to Geeta Colony Police Station.

An FIR was registered in the national capital on Tuesday (February 14), police said.

What does the police say:

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Shahdara) Rohit Meena said, a complaint was registered stating that some unknown person impersonated Central Petroleum and Natural Gas Puri.

He said the accused was using the minister’s photo as his profile picture on WhatsApp. He had recently sent a message to Mahonlumo Kikon, BJP’s national spokesperson and in-charge of Mizoram.

It is suspected that his WhatsApp account may have been hacked by sending him a phishing link or through OTP. The police said that the police have written to WhatsApp regarding the matter.

The police identified the man through technical surveillance and local enquiry, after which he was called for questioning, he said.
