TIRUPUR: The Tirupur district police in Tamil Nadu have arrested a 66-year-old man for sexually assaulting his 14-year-old step-granddaughter. The man was arrested on Tuesday, eleven months after the sexual assault had happened.
Based on complaint filed by the girl’s father, the Udumalpet all-woman police registered a case under sections 7 (sexual assault) read with 8 (punishment for sexual assault) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. The accused was remanded in judicial custody.
Police said that the complainant was working in a diamond polishing unit in Gujarat. The girl is his daughter from his first wife. The accused is the father of the complainant’s second wife.
The sexual assault took place on March 3, 2021 when the girl was alone at home. The elderly man forcibly made her sit on his lap and touched her private parts. He also warned the girl not to disclose the incident to anyone. The girl was afraid of the elderly man and did not reveal it to her stepmother and father.
She shared the incident with her father in November 2021. Her father felt that it was not safe to keep the child in his native place. While leaving for Gujarat, he took the girl along with him and left her with his relatives in Mumbai.
On Tuesday, he reached the Udumalpet all-woman police station along with his daughter and filed a written complaint.
