Mamta on empty ‘gang rape’, not surprised if minor dies after being slapped

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday cast doubt on the cause of death of a minor girl whom her family blamed for the gang-rape, and wondered whether the death of a Class 9 student of Hanskhali in Nadia district belonged to anyone. Falling after slap. Stating that the victim had an affair with the accused, the son of a Trinamool Congress leader, who was arrested, Banerjee wondered if she was pregnant. The chief minister also asked why the girl’s family members lodged a police complaint five days after her death and the body was cremated.

Opposition parties called Banerjee’s statement “shocking” and alleged that she tries to protect the accused as he is the son of a leader of their party. The girl died after she was allegedly gang-raped at a birthday party at the accused’s house. According to his parents, who filed a police complaint on April 10, he was bleeding profusely when he returned home on April 5 and died later that night.

“The police are yet to understand the cause of death. I asked them. Would you call it rape or was she pregnant? Was it (the result) a love affair? Have you inquired about them? This is an unfortunate incident.

“You (the girl’s family) also performed the last rites of the body. I am talking like a common man. From where will they (police) get the evidence whether she was raped or was pregnant or there was some other reason like she was slapped by someone after which she fell ill.” A detailed investigation is on, he said. She will ask the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights to take up the matter.

The girl died on April 5 and the police received information on April 10, the TMC supremo said and asked the reason for the delay. The opposition BJP criticized Banerjee for her remarks and wondered whether her remarks were intended to influence the investigation. “Shocking statement by Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, which despises the brutal rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl in Nadia’s Hanskhali. She questions the victim and asks if it was a love affair or an unplanned pregnancy! As the accused is the son of a TMC leader, senior BJP leader and party’s West Bengal co-in-charge Amit Malviya tweeted.

Echoing them, Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari said such comments only proved how Banerjee was trying to influence the investigation and shield the culprits. When such an incident happens in BJP ruled states, she is the first to oppose it. But when similar incidents happen in West Bengal, she tries to save the culprits. It is shameful that despite being a woman Chief Minister, she is making such remarks. He said that this is the real picture of the chaotic situation in Bengal.

The CPI(M) and Congress also criticized Banerjee for her remarks. Leader of Congress party in Lok Sabha and state Congress chief Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury claimed that many such incidents in West Bengal go unreported.

“We don’t know about him. Now the incident has come to light. What has happened is appalling. He said the ruling party is trying to influence the investigation. Senior CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty alleged That the incident proves that there is anarchy in Bengal. The ruling Trinamool Congress condemned the incident but said it should not be politicised. Police is probing the matter and have also made arrests. Let the investigation be completed. TMC Spokesperson and state general secretary Kunal Ghosh said the opposition should not try to politicize the matter.
