Mamta Banerjee will take oath in the assembly on Thursday after a massive victory in Bhawanipur

New Delhi: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will take oath in the Assembly on Thursday after her comfortable victory in the recently held Bhawanipur by-election.

Giving information about the same, West Bengal Minister Partha Chatterjee said: “West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee will take oath in the assembly on October 7. We have requested the Governor to attend the swearing-in of the Chief Minister.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday won the Bhabnipur assembly seat over BJP candidate Priyanka Tibrewal by a huge margin of over 58,000 votes.

According to the Election Commission, the difference of votes between Mamata Banerjee and Priyanka Tibrewal was 58,835. Mamata got a total of 85,263 votes while her BJP rival got 26,428 votes.

The landslide victory of the TMC supremo secured her position as the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

The Bhawanipur by-election was significant as Mamata Banerjee had to become a member of the state legislature till November 5 to continue as chief minister after her defeat in Nandigram.

The bypoll in Bhawanipur was called following the resignation of TMC party leader Shobhandeb Chattopadhyay, who had stepped down to make way for him.

There were 21 rounds of counting of votes in Bhabnipur assembly constituency. Over 57 per cent polling was recorded in the assembly constituency, while Samserganj and Jangipur recorded 79.92 per cent and 77.63 per cent respectively.

After the massive victory, Mamta Banerjee said, ‘Ever since the elections have started in Bengal, the central government conspired to remove us (from power). My feet hurt because I can’t contest elections. I am grateful to the public for voting for us and the Election Commission for holding elections within 6 months.

Mamata Banerjee further asserted that she has registered victory in every ward of the constituency.

The West Bengal Chief Minister said, “Here (in Bhabnipur) about 46 per cent people are non-Bengalis. They all have voted for me. People of West Bengal are watching Bhabnipur, which has inspired me.
