Mamata’s damage control after Birbhum: ‘Didi Ke Baalo’ to restart to address grievances

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Sunday announced that she will resume her program ‘Didi Ke Balo’ (Talk to Didi, as the Chief Minister is known) to listen to the issues of the people.

On Sunday, she announced, “If you have any problem, talk to me. We will start that program from April. You can directly tell me about any incident of corruption.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief Banerjee began her tour of North Bengal on Sunday. Their itinerary includes stopping in hills and plains before returning to Kolkata on April 1.

‘Didi ke Balo’ It was launched in 2019 as a step towards public access and was monitored by IPAC. The approach was ‘Mamata se Janata’ (Mamata to the people). The CM had given a phone number on which people could place their complaints.

Party leaders were also instructed to engage in outreach.

This helped build the image for the government and Banerjee won the 2021 election with a thumping majority.

Political experts say that the program is being restarted to improve the image of the government amid the Birbhum violence.

On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said that the Birbhum incident proves how things are in Bengal, so it is just a sham.

Meanwhile, a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) team reached Bogtui village near Rampurhat town in West Bengal’s Birbhum district on Saturday and started investigation into the violence.

Unidentified men torched 10 houses in the village on March 21, killing at least eight people, including women and children.

The Calcutta High Court had handed over the investigation of the case on Friday. Birbhum Murders to CBI. The ruling TMC claimed that the opposition leaders were indulging in “narrow-minded politics over dead bodies”, while the BJP accused the TMC of trying to shield criminals.

In damage-control mode, Banerjee had assured that “no one would be spared” and alleged that some people were trying to “defame West Bengal”.
