CM Mamata Banerjee’s announcement comes a day after multiplexes in Tamil Nadu stopped screening The Kerala Story following protests in some cities.

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee Producer Vipul Shah’s ‘The Kerala Story’ on Monday announced a ban in the state. The Adah Sharma starrer hit the theaters on Friday (May 5) amidst huge controversy and several petitions challenging its release. Banerjee’s announcement comes a day after multiplexes in Tamil Nadu stopped screening Kerala Story following protests in some cities, including Chennai.

News agency ANI quoted Mamata Banerjee as saying, “The West Bengal government has decided to ban the film The Kerala Story. This is to avoid any incident of hatred and violence and to maintain peace in the state.” The story of Kerala revolves around a Hindu woman from Kerala who is converted to Islam and trafficked to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The Kerala Story is facing backlash from a section of political parties and groups who have claimed that the film is not based on facts, and propagates hatred against the Muslim community.

Reacting to Banerjee’s decision, Vipul Shah said, “If she has done this, we will take legal action.” We will fight whatever is possible under the provisions of the law.”

Apart from Adah Sharma, Kerala Story also stars Yogita Bihani, Siddhi Idnani and Sonia Balani in key roles. Many viewers have labeled the film as ‘propaganda’. Recently Adah Sharma also gave a befitting reply to those who called The Kerala Story a ‘propaganda’ film on her Twitter account. She called her film ‘Asli’ and urged everyone to google ‘ISIS’ and ‘brides’ to know the truth.

“And some are still calling #TheKeralaStory a propaganda film, saying these incidents do not exist even after seeing testimonials of many Indian victims, My humble request, Google two words ISIS and Brides… May be Aapko heard white girls ka ek khata banaa de you think our Indian film is real,” she wrote.

The film which released last Friday gained massive traction till Sunday taking the numbers to Rs 35 crore. Industry tracking website Sacnilk reported that the film earned Rs 16.50 crore on Sunday. Meanwhile, on Friday and Saturday collectively, the film has managed to collect a total of Rs 20 crore at the ticket window. The report further states that the Sudipto Sen-directed film has earned over 52.92 per cent and the collection on the third day of its screening was already over 50 per cent.
