other facts
Malaysia is made up of two non-contiguous regions: West Malaysia on the Malay Peninsula, which includes 11 states, and East Malaysia, on the island of Borneo, which includes two states.
Since Malaysia’s independence in 1957, the sultan who is the hereditary monarch in nine of the country’s 13 states has elected one of them as king for a five-year term. The role of the king in Malaysia is largely ceremonial, and the power to govern rests with the federal parliament and the prime minister.
