Nowadays school going children start using computers and mobile phones from an early age and it has become necessary to make them aware of cybercrime.

In the wake of rising cyber crime in the state, the Himachal Police has written to the education department, urging it to include digital civics and cyber security in the school curriculum.

According to the information received from the police department, due to the increasing use of mobile and digital payments, there has been an increase in cyber crime and the number of complaints registered in such cases has increased from 923 in 2017 to 6207 in 2021.

In a letter addressed to the Principal Secretary (Education), it has been said that the inclusion of chapters on cyber security and digital civics in the school curriculum will spread awareness on cyber crimes and help the younger generation stay safe in the digital world.

Police officials said that unlike traditional crime, cybercrime knows no boundaries and is characterized by fast-paced technological changes.

He said that police are conducting regular awareness campaigns in schools and colleges to make students aware about such crimes, but still combating cybercrime is challenging and campaigns are necessary as prevention is better than cure.

He said that common cyber crimes include phishing scams, identity theft, online harassment, cyberstalking, invasion of privacy, debit/credit card frauds, ATM frauds and pornography and there has been a significant increase in cyber crimes against women and children. .

Superintendent of Police (Cyber ​​Crime) Rohit Malpani said that 10 to 15 per cent of cyber complaints directly or indirectly involve children and in complaints related to social media, this number goes up to more than 30 per cent.

He told PTI that a proposal has been sent to the education department to introduce chapters on digital civics and cyber security in the school curriculum.

Requesting the inclusion of these chapters in the school curriculum of all schools affiliated to the Himachal Pradesh Board of Secondary Education, the letter also states that CBSE And ICSE has already taken steps in this regard.

Reference to literature developed by CBSE, Reserve Bank of India, ICSE and Ministry of Home Affairs to name a few books – Cyber ​​Safety Manual for Children, Cyber ​​Safety Handbook for Children, A Handbook on Modalities of Financial Fraudsters, A Handbook for Adolescents/ Students were also advertised on Cyber ​​Safety and Kids and Cyber ​​Safety.
