The incident of food poisoning and non-availability of details on the health condition of at least eight women workers led to protests near Oragadam in Kancheepuram district late on Friday evening. The protesting women demanded the district administration to bring back the hospitalized women and take action against the in-charge of a hostel and hostel, as he provided spoiled food to the workers.
The women said they were forced to hit the road after being asked questions about the food poisoning incident and the health status of their co-workers, but did not get any satisfactory response from the staff.
As the protests began at 9 pm on Friday night, with traffic on the highway getting affected, the Sriperumbudur police reached the spot and tried to pacify them. He then diverted vehicles parked for 5 km on either side of Sriperumbudur town by alternate routes.
On Saturday too, after the agitators stayed, Kancheepuram District Collector Aarti ordered to register a case against the hostel warden for providing spoiled food to the workers at one o’clock in the afternoon. The collector also made a video call on their mobile phone and asked the eight ‘missing girls’ to speak to the agitators. After this, the women activists called off the dharna and dispersed.
Earlier, when the policemen tried to chase the agitators and restore traffic, the protesters raised slogans against the police. Thereafter, Inspector General of Police (North Zone) Santosh Kumar held talks and pacified them. Police said trouble began when over 100 inmates, who had food at the Haveli canteen last Wednesday, complained of nausea and upset stomach. They were treated in nearby government and private hospitals. Most of the women stayed in hospitals for two days and were treated there.
Sriperampudur Industrial Group in Kancheepuram district is home to several local and multinational companies and employs over 5 lakh male and female workers from Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. There are over 10,000 small, medium and multinational automobile, chemical and mobile phone and laptop component factories operating in the region. These factories arrange havelis or hostels for their workers and also provide food.
