‘Maintain alertness, take pre-emptive action’: Health secretaries of 5 states on Covid cases

new Delhi: Days after several states curbed the spread of COVID-19 in the wake of declining daily caseload, the Union Health Ministry on Friday asked Delhi, Haryana, Kerala, Maharashtra and Mizoram to keep a close watch and take prompt action if required.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan has written to the above states on the rise in Covid-19 cases last week, asking them to maintain strict vigil and take pre-emptive action, if required, news agency ANI reported.

As per reports, Bhushan will hold a meeting tomorrow with the Health Secretaries and health officials of all the States/UTs regarding the administration of COVID19 precautionary doses.

Delhi, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Kerala and other states have all lifted COVID-induced restrictions, while some have made wearing face masks optional.

Experts questioned the move and said that wearing of masks should be mandatory despite India seeing a big drop in Covid cases.

The recent directive from the central government comes weeks after asking states to follow a risk assessment-based approach in opening up of economic and social activities.

In a letter to all states and union territories in March, Bhushan had said, “There is a need to follow a risk assessment-based approach in opening up of economic and social activities without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic.” “

Bhushan asked states to enforce norms like wearing face masks and maintaining social distancing in all public places, “There should be a constant focus on a five-fold strategy i.e. test, track, treat, vaccinate and adhere to COVID-appropriate behaviour. ” ,

He also emphasized that there should be a continuous review of the emerging data of new cases on the basis of continuous and critical level of testing.
