The Indian Navy on Tuesday successfully engaged a supersonic surface-to-surface target using its latest indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao.

According to the Indian Marine force, this inaugural exercise demonstrates the Navy’s commitment to Aatmanirbhar Bharat and future-proof war readiness.

“Indian Navy’s latest indigenous guided missile destroyer INS Mormugao successfully engaged a supersonic target floating in the ocean. In a statement, the Indian Navy said, this first attempt demonstrates the future proof combat readiness of IN and commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat.

Named after the notable port city of Goa on the west coast, Mormugao unabashedly embraced its most memorable voyage on December 19, 2021, when Goa celebrated 60 years of independence from Portuguese rule.

According to the Indian Navy, the ship is 163 meters in length, 17 meters in width and has a displacement of 7,400 tonnes. It is considered to be one of the most powerful warships built in India.

In a combined gas and gas (COGAG) configuration, the ship is propelled by four powerful gas turbines that can reach speeds in excess of 30 knots. The ship’s improved stealth capabilities reduce its radar cross section (RCS).

Surface-to-surface missiles and surface-to-air missiles are two sophisticated weapons and sensors found at Mormugao. The ship’s artillery weapon systems receive target information from state-of-the-art surveillance radars.

Rocket launchers, torpedo launchers and ASW helicopters were originally built to provide the boat with anti-submarine warfare capabilities. It is prepared to fight in nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) fighting conditions, the Defense Ministry was quoted as saying by ANI.
